Supporting local communities through partnership, participation and long-term regional benefit.
The Goldboro Gold Project is being advanced with a commitment to meaningful community engagement, local participation and long-term social and economic value in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough and across the surrounding region. NexGold’s approach is rooted in ongoing dialogue, responsible development and practical community support that reflects local priorities.
Our goal is to build strong relationships with communities, Indigenous rightsholders, local organizations, students, businesses and residents as the project advances. This includes supporting community programs, creating education and employment pathways, encouraging local procurement and maintaining open channels for information-sharing and feedback.
Goldboro’s community activities are focused on areas where the project can make a practical and lasting contribution, including:
Community support
NexGold has established a Community Grants Program for groups, organizations and community projects within the Municipality of the District of Guysborough. Eligible not-for-profit and charitable organizations can apply for grants, with the program administered twice each year in the spring and fall. The program provides a minimum grant amount of $1,000 per successful application.
Education and youth
As part of the project’s community commitments, the Goldboro framework includes five bursaries for local high school students, beginning with $5,000 annually and increasing to $10,000 in 2025 or when commercial production begins.
Local hiring and local business participation
NexGold has stated a “hire locally, purchase locally” philosophy and has committed to targeted measures for local recruitment and employment, collaboration on labour market and training opportunities, and engagement with local businesses and suppliers to identify procurement and service opportunities tied to the project.
Ongoing dialogue and accessibility
The project includes a commitment to maintain a local project information office within the municipality and to facilitate ongoing dialogue and quarterly updates with the Municipality of the District of Guysborough regarding project progress and implementation of community benefit commitments.
Indigenous engagement and shared benefits
In December 2024, Signal Gold, now part of NexGold, signed a Benefits Agreement with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs for the Goldboro Project. The agreement covers all phases of the project and outlines economic, environmental, cultural, employment and other benefits for the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, with an emphasis on environmental stewardship and respectful collaboration.

Community Benefits Agreement
Goldboro’s community approach is already backed by formal commitments and ongoing implementation.
Since the 2022 Community Benefits Agreement with the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, the project has committed annual community funding, student bursaries, a local office presence and measures designed to increase local participation in project-related opportunities. The associated socio-economic framework also includes support for local hiring, business engagement, apprenticeship and co-op placements, and employee relocation incentives within the municipality.
To date, community support has included:
These commitments sit alongside broader regional benefits expected from the project. The Nova Scotia government said in 2025 that the Goldboro Project is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits, including direct and indirect employment, community benefit agreements and additional municipal tax revenues.
As Goldboro advances, NexGold intends to continue building on the relationships and commitments already established in the region. Our community approach is centred on transparency, accessibility, local opportunity and shared benefit. We believe responsible project development includes listening to community perspectives, supporting local priorities and creating opportunities that extend beyond the project site.
NexGold is developing the Goldboro Project within the Municipality of the District of Guysborough and has entered a Community Benefits Agreement with the Municipality to reflect the Company’s commitment to benefit the Municipality and its residents and communities.
As part of the Community Benefit Agreement, NexGold has established a Community Grants Program whereby it has committed an amount of grant funding each year toward community groups, organizations, and community projects within the Municipality. Eligible organizations can use this form to apply for a minimum
$1000 grant from NexGold. NexGold’s Community Grants Program shall be administered two times a year during the Spring and the Fall.
The Community Grants Program is a great way to obtain funding for important projects, programs, and/or events of your not-for-profit organization located in or serving the Municipality of the District of Guysborough. Applications will be reviewed by an application evaluation committee comprised of the Company and The Municipality to determine the suitability of any recipient of such grant and any related terms and conditions of such grant. Eligible applicants and applications are required to meet the following criteria:
